An idiom is a group of words, or in other words, a phrase that has a meaning other than its literal meaning of the words in it.
Idiom:
lock the barn door after the horse is stolen
Meaning:
to be careful or try to make something safe after it is too late
Example:
Trying to prevent a basement flood after the rains have started is like locking the barn door after the horse is stolen.
