An idiom is a group of words, or in other words, a phrase that has a meaning different from the literal meaning of the words in it.
Idiom:
put oneself in (someone) else's place/position
Meaning:
to allow oneself to see or experience something from someone else's point of view
Example:
It was difficult to put myself in the woman's place after she had lost her only child.
