A verb combined with an adverb or a preposition, or sometimes both, to give a new meaning.


Phrasal Verb:
blow something up

Meaning / Example:

1. to inflate something.
> He didn't have enough breath to blow the balloon up.

2. to have a photograph enlarged.
> How big can you blow this picture up?

Phrasal verbs consists of a basic verb + another word or words. The two or three words that make up a phrasal verb form a short 'phrase' - which is why we call them 'phrasal verbs'.
