Phrasal Verb


Phrasal verbs consists of a basic verb + another word or words. The two or three words that make up a phrasal verb form a short 'phrase' - which is why we call them 'phrasal verbs'.


Phrasal Verb:
hold someone or something off and keep someone or something off

Meaning / Example:

1. to do something physical to keep someone or something away; to stave someone or something off.
> Tom was trying to rob us, but we managed to hold him off.
> I couldn't keep off the reporters any longer.

2. to make someone or something wait.
> I know a lot of people are waiting to see me. Hold them off for a while longer.
