Phrasal verbs consists of a basic verb + another word or words. The two or three words that make up a phrasal verb form a short 'phrase' - which is why we call them 'phrasal verbs'.

knock someone out
Meaning / Example:
1. to knock someone unconscious. (Someone includes oneself.) > Fred knocked Mike out and left him there in the gutter.
2. to make someone unconsciousness. > The drug knocked her out quickly. > The powerful medicine knocked out the patient.
3. to surprise or please someone. > I have some news that will really knock you out.
4. to wear someone out; to exhaust someone. > All that exercise really knocked me out.
Phrasal verbs, also called two-word verbs, are idiomatic expressions wherein the second element of the verb (the adverb or particle) is not necessarily predictable.
