A verb combined with an adverb or a preposition, or sometimes both, to give a new meaning.
Phrasal Verb:
open someone up Fig.
Meaning:
to perform a surgical operation requiring a major incision on someone.
Example:
The doctor had to open George up to find out what was wrong.
A group of words which have a different meaning when used together from the one they would have if you took the meaning of each word separately.
