Phrasal verbs are two or more words that together act as a completely new verb with a meaning separate from those of the original words.

Meaning:
to lessen the effect or importance of someone or something.
Example:
John is a famous actor, but the director tried to play him down as just another member of the cast.
A verb combined with an adverb or a preposition, or sometimes both, to give a new meaning.
