2. and shake something down to test something to find out how it works or what the problems are. > I need to spend some time driving my new car to shake it out. > We need to shake down this car before I buy it.
Phrasal verbs consists of a basic verb + another word or words. The two or three words that make up a phrasal verb form a short 'phrase' - which is why we call them 'phrasal verbs'.
