A phrase that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both and that functions as a verb whose meaning is different from the combined meanings of the individual words.

1. to turn around to face a different direction. > Jill spun around to face her accuser. > Todd spun around in his chair so he could see who was talking to him.
2. to rotate, possibly a number of times. > The propellers spun around and soon the old plane began to taxi down the runway.
Phrasal verbs consists of a basic verb + another word or words. The two or three words that make up a phrasal verb form a short 'phrase' - which is why we call them 'phrasal verbs'.
