Phrasal Verb


A phrase that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both and that functions as a verb whose meaning is different from the combined meanings of the individual words


Phrasal Verb:
burn (oneself) out Fig.

Meaning:
to do something so long and so intensely that one gets sick and tired of doing it. (See also burn someone out.)

Example:
I burned myself out as a competitive swimmer. I just cannot stand to practice anymore.
