A phrase that consists of a verb with a preposition or adverb or both, the meaning of which is different from the meaning of its separate parts.
Phrasal Verb:
rain something out [for the weather]
Meaning:
to spoil something by raining.
Example:
It's starting to sprinkle now. Do you think it will rain out the ball game?
Phrasal verbs are compound verbs that result from combining a verb with an adverb or a preposition. The resulting compound verb is idiomatic.
