Phrasal verbs are two or more words that together act as a completely new verb with a meaning separate from those of the original words.
Phrasal Verb:
strike out
Meaning / Example:
1. [for a baseball batter] to be declared out after making three strikes. (Baseball.) > And so Drew Wilson strikes out for his second time in this game!
2. to fail. > Well, we struck out again, but we'll keep trying. > I hear you struck out on that Acme proposal. Better luck next time.
Phrasal verbs consists of a basic verb + another word or words. The two or three words that make up a phrasal verb form a short 'phrase' - which is why we call them 'phrasal verbs'.
